Friends of the Foundation

It has been one month since Charlie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, but it already feels much longer. The sadness gripped us immediately because we have watched first hand how this disease can change a child’s carefree life and how it impacts a family. Charlie is the cousin of Hope and Maggie and the nephew of Peter. They have been a great support for our family as we negotiate the daily regime of trying to maintain Chalies glucose levels. Just when we feel we have a handle on his daily levels, he may end up with an unexplainable low or high. Our worry for our son’s well being is on our minds 24 -7 , especially when he walks out the door in the morning and heads to school or when he closes his eyes at night for a peaceful night sleep . Charlie has accepted this disease, but like us, he wants to be cured. So we all pray each day that a cure is on the horizon. Type 1 Diabetes is on the rise and thru the Lemonade Foundation hopefully more people will be informed of the urgency to find a cure.

Casey is our hero. We are reminded of that daily. He has bravely faced the challenges of his new routine for the last 9 months since his diagnosis of type I diabetes. While our memories of his admission to the hospital at diagnosis are filled with fear, sadness, and frustration, his memories are of X box in the playroom and Gamecube in bed. His happy spirit makes us smile even when all we want to do is cry. He rarely complains and has taken more responsibility for his disease than one could ever expect from a 7 year old boy. Though it has been helpful to have our friends and doctor tell us that it is going to be O.K., that we are going to be able to manage this, it is Casey’s carefree and playful attitude that lets us know that it really is going to be O.K. and likely better than O.K. Though we pray for a cure some day, until that time, we will continue to take our cues from our little hero as we manage this illness daily.
